When do humans cooperate with machines? In online experiments using the infinitely repeated Prisoner’s Dilemma, we study how humans interact with algorithms that either mimic human behavior or maximize profits. Humans cooperate less with profit-maximizing algorithms, yet their behavior becomes more predictable, aligning closely with thresholds for cooperation stemming from equilibrium selection theory. When both players are profit-maximizing algorithms, cooperation becomes nearly deterministic. Our results show that both the type and strategy of artificial opponents shape human cooperation, and that algorithmic integration increases behavioral predictability in strategic interactions.
